Please note it is not mandatory to register the birth of your child at the Embassy. If you wish to apply for a British passport, you should apply direct to the Passport Office in Liverpool, UK. For information on how to apply please check the website https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports. If you have already registered your child’s birth and obtained a British birth registration certificate for your child, you may only send the British birth registration certificate along with the passport application to UK without further documents. However, there may still be instances where further documentation could be requested by UK.
Guidelines on processing the Local Birth Certificate and UAE residence visa:
You must register the birth with the UAE Authorities prior to registering the birth with the British Embassy in the UAE. The hospital will issue a birth notification. This needs to be taken to the Ministry of Health to register the child and obtain a local Arabic birth certificate along with an English Translation. Both certificates must then be presented to the Ministry Of Foreign Affairs for legalisation. Some hospitals are able to help you with this. The registration should be completed within the first 30 days following the child’s birth. If you miss this time limit with the UAE authorities, you may have problems getting the birth registered. You may also be subject to a fine. After obtaining a passport for the child, you will also need to regularise your child’s visa status with immigration. You have 120 days from the date of birth to do this. You will be subject to a fine if you do not do this within the designated time.
