The government has published its responses to 2 important reports on the legal and regulatory framework for charities:
- the report by the Public Administration Select Committee (PASC): Third Report of 2013-14: The role of the Charity Commission and “public benefit”: Post-legislative scrutiny of the Charities Act 2006
- Lord Hodgson’s statutory review of the Charities Act 2006: Trusted and Independent, Giving charity back to charities
Both reports made recommendations about the rules and regulations that charities in England and Wales must follow, and the way in which they are regulated by the Charity Commission. The government carefully considered the recommendations made in both reports and, after listening to feedback from charities and others, has accepted many, but not all, of the recommended changes. There are also a number of changes that were recommended for others to consider, such as the Charity Commission or charities themselves.
Any legislation to implement recommendations would be subject to consultation with charities and other interested parties. We will report back on implementation in one year.
